The 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA-class has the honor of being nominated for the 2014 North American Car of the Year, but it will face some stiff competition. Last year the 2013 Cadillac ATS took home the prize, and this year Cadillac returns with two entries on the long list, the CTS and the ELR. The automakers with the most entries between both the Car of the Year list and the Truck/Utility of the Year list are Kia and Chevrolet with five entries each.

The long list will be shortened to about 12 vehicles come Fall, after the 50 NACTOY jurors have a chance to drive all the vehicles. Another vote will bring the list to the top three with the winner being announced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Any snubs? Anything you are surprised to see on the list? Do you think the CLA could win it all?

Check out the full list below.

I have a good feeling the CLA will rank high once the final results are in. A few of the cars listed are very competitive, so, as much as I'd like to say the CLA will be the best....it's really tough to say that!

Other cars that amaze me from this list:

Lexus IS
BMW 4 Series
2014 S-Class (this one especially)
Jaguar F-Type

I think that the EVs on the list will be quite competitive. They are examples of fuel efficiency and modern technology. The Chevy Spark EV has been getting rave reviews. I also am excited to see how the CLA does. I think it will rank pretty high.

I can believe that the CLa will rank up and show on the list. It make sense, It will be mentioned on a vast majority for a lot of categories. One being the best and most affordable luxury compact.

I think that the CLA will make the short list in the Fall, but I think it's gonna get dropped from the top 3. What do you guys think the top 3 will be?

My picks (in no particular order)
1. Cadillac ELR
2. Chevy Spark EV
3. BMW 4-Series

2014 Kia Soul
2014 Toyota Corolla
2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

How did those make its way on the list?

I have faith that the CLA will be mentioned a couple times. I can't to get it. Just a few more months until it all happens...

I am going to keep a close eye on the 2014 Acura RLX and BMW 4 series. I won;t be getting any of them but I just love the way they look. I wish I could buy one of those but the wife would just kill me if it ever happened. They are the better looking ones on the list too beside the ghibli.

I just can't see a two-door convertible winning the prize. I think it will be a luxury sedan, an EV, or a compact.

^ I agree, convertibles in general are a niche market themselves. There isn't much onlookers with that kinda depth in their pockets.

I could see a compact taking the win. Hybrids and Ev will still have to work their way up.

All of the Mazdas have a good shot at it. They are affordable, have great reviews, and appeal to a much larger market than other cars on the list, which are either too cheap or too expensive.

A car like the CLA can definitely make a run for it, but I don't think it will take the big prize.
