Engine light is on

50208 Views 46 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Timothy Muir
I bought a CLA250 on last Friday ( 10/25/13 ). Three days later, my engine light was on on the way to my office, the mileage was around 296 miles.

This Monday (10/28/13), I drove back to the dealer, and they said someone has the same problem, and has already noticed the Mercedes. It is a program issue, it won't effect the car and safety; now the engineers are trying to fix up the problem with re-programing. Once they are done, they will let me know so I can bring the car to the dealership to install it.

They told me this before I sent it to the maintenance, I don't know if they were trying to avoid me to get the official record or what? Right now I'm still driving the car with the engine light on.

Any suggestion? What should I do right now?

I'd ask for ...

A free keychain
A free tshirt
2 free service visits
A hug from the service manager

Is that too much? :)

Joe
lol

I mean should I ask for anything that could be the evidence I can use in the future~ XD...
put the pistons through the hood and show them what they caused ;)

Kidding...

I wonder if Mercedes would give S class owners this type of runaround?

Have you tried showing up unannounced? see if you can at least get someone to show you that there is no engine code coming up, otherwise its guilty until proven innocent
Sorry about the late.
the code is P24D62A

After re-install the program, everything looks ok now.
Hopefully nothing will happen anymore. :p

ok, here is what happened this morning.

I made an appointment at 7:45 am today. When I was driving on the way to the service, my service advisor called me. ( I know this guy for more than 7 yrs. )

Service advisor: Are you coming in due to the engine light on problem?

I: Yes.

I filled the service form on their website instead of call him directly, cause I know I probably will be rejected or dismissed by the same excuse. I am trying to get a engine code from there.

Then he said: The engine light on is a known problem, they are trying to fix the problem. The new program will be sent to us in about 2 weeks, you can call me two weeks later so I can arrange the appointment for you.

I: Don't you need to check if there is anyother problem on the engine?

Service advisor: No, lots of CLA has the same problem, it's because the sensor is too sensitive, it's not a big deal, nothing wrong with the engine.

I: humm.....O..k...., but can you turn off the engine light for me, it's very irritating to me. ( To me, I don't know what going on there, the engine light on always makes me feel it's gonna be explored within next several seconds...=.= )

Service advisor: Sorry we can't do that, We can not keep your new car in our facility (due to that problem).

I guess they don't want to have a record on that, otherwise I can use that as an evidence to say the car is a lemon car.

I: So will you call me when you get the new program two weeks later? It's gonna be like a recall, right?

Service advisor: umm, it'd be better if you can give me a call, too many CLA (or customers he said I don't remember) here I need to take care; and yeah, every CLA needs to install the new program.

Conversation is over.
I type this by my memory, not exectly the words we were using, just in case.

I knew I am gonna get this kind of result, that's why I came here yesterday and asked what should I do.

What do you think? Any good ideas about next step?
From my experience, I called the service department and told them the check engine light came on. They told me to bring it in. Three days later I went to pick it up and they said that it was a wiring issue and they fixed it. I went to pick it back up and the light was still on so I gave it right back. Now they are saying they are not sure what the issue is.
All,

I just had the engine light go on with about 1900 miles on the car and i have a device called Automatic which monitors you cars computer and it threw a code P023812 which is Boost pressure sensor. What was happening is that it was it was shorting out. The did some wiring chasing and found nothing. So they took one off a car in lot and it corrected the problem and then ordered the new sensor for me it took about three days to resolve the issue and I'm not sure if it was isolated issue or going to be a problem for others but i thought i would share my exp. But I'm back up and running so all is good in my world. They also updated the software during trouble shooting but that didn't resolve with out a new sensor.

My CEL just came on today while driving on the highway, @5000 miles.
Have an appt next Wednesday, dealer is providing a loaner.

I had the code read out at the local AutoZone, it was P24D6 .
Reading the forum and elsewhere, I get the sense that this is an engine computer software issue and there an update available.

It may be my imagination but it feels like it runs a bit rougher at highway
speeds, and I detect a slight burning insulation smell, when I open the hood.

One thing I definitely notice, my coolant temp now swings up and down.
After warming up, it used to be just glued to the 80 degree mark and never move. Now I see it maybe around 95, but it comes down to 80 if I accelerate.
then as the car settles down goes back up again to 95.

I notice another unrelated issue, at higway speeds ( 60mph or over) I now notice some brake pedal judder. This issue is familiar, I used to have it really bad on my Nissan Maxima until I finally ditched the OEM rotors and pads and switched to ceramic pads. Basically either slight rotor warping, or more likely, uneven brake pad material coating on the rotor and uneven rotor wear. Usually a mark of a crappy rotor/pad combo. Rather disappointing...

@coder - Keep us posted on what they find.
Got my car back after the CEl came on.
Dealer Reflashed the engine firmware. The car seems to run better..
No more CEL.

The invoice references a tech bulletin:

"FOUND FAULT PURGE SYSTEM CHECK BULLETIN FOUND #LI47.30-P-057461"
"PERFORM CONTROL UNIT UPDATE"

I mentioned to them I had some brake pedal vibration when braking at highway speeds.
They replaced the front rotors, pads and sensors. These guys take no prisoners, I say.

Gave me a C-300 for a loaner, got the whole thing done inside 10 hours.

I will post an update if the CEL comes back on. We have not heard back from the person who started the thread. It would be good to know if the firmware upgrade really takes care of the CEL problem for good.

Follow-up on CEL service

I am following up on my earlier post.

One alarming issue: After the engine computer firmware update, my mileage is a lot worse than before.

I do the same trip, about 78 miles on the highway. Used to get 35 to 40+ mpg depending on speed. Put it on cruze control @60 all the way, and get 40+
consistently.

Now the best I can get is 32mpg no matter what I do.

Did anybody see this after the CEL fix?
I have decided to give the problem some time.

Come to think of it, a firmware re-flash likely resets the computer
and it may need some time to re-adjust.
Nice that's where i plan to get my car serviced, wonder if i can get them to do some custom coding ☺ to enable hidden features

its possible. but the car should really relearn everything within a few days

How were you determining your fuel usage, from the trip computer or by manual calculation of fuel used over distance traveled on a tank of fuel?

I've kept track of my fuel usage and found that the trip computer is mostly accurate over a whole fuel tank but does bias toward the "good" economy side. Where I calculated my usage to be 30 to 32mpg it would say 32mpg.

What was the weather like before the update and after when you noticed worse fuel usage?

Also, did they fill up for you? Not saying they did it, but if someone was being dumb and put in 87 octane fuel it could really hurt your economy (and your engine over time).
Hello,

I have done it both ways, and find the trip computer fairly accurate. I am using premium (93 oct. Mobile) and it does not look they topped off the tank. The weather is a bit warmer recently than it was before the ECU update.

In any case, I see the numbers improving recently. I think the issue was : the ECU update resets to factory defaults. It looks like, it takes some time for the computer to re-optimize its settings based on observed data. I have now 150 miles racked up since the update, and I am almost back to where I was before. (Getting close to 38mpg on hwy now).

I would be really interested in what kind of experience other folks had, who had the ECU update done.
Sounds intriguing.. what sort of hidden features you speak of?

There is a hidden maintenance menu, accessible from the "trip" heading on screen.
(Hold down the phone connect button on the right of the steering wheel, then hold down the OK button on the left side).
The only interesting thing I have seen there ( besides a large number of read only info items) is to set the brakes to "service" position.
I reckon it makes it easier/possible to change the pads?
So far the only one i know is start up animation for the guages you know when you turn on the ignition...
