Harsh handling/road noise

Good Day,

I test drove a CLA250 with a sport package which, as you know, includes the 18 inch run flat summer tires. i like the car and ordered the 4 matic with all season tires.

Recently, two reviews, the one in this month's car and driver and the one in consumer report both slammed the CLA for the harsh ride and road noise. To the point that I am having misgivings.

my question is.........is this a function of the run flat tires? narrow wheelbase or sport suspension that USA versions of the CLA have? If it's just the tires, I would replace with non run flat tires, I don't really think they are worth the hassle,
Are the 17 inch all season tires more quiet? Any insight would be appreciated!

If you substitute NON run-flat tires for a smoother and quieter ride, what are you supposed to do if you have a flat? Is there such a thing as a pump blow-in temporary sealer that in some cases might work? Never looked into this since I always had a spare.

You can buy a tire patch kit which does require you take the wheel off (if you can't reach it) , it's something I would do even though it requires more effort. But in the end it's just a 30-45 minute delay.

Or you can buy this goo that goes in the tire and is supposed to seal off the hole, that stuff is just too messy.

You should get a tire fit kit from Continental Tire or from Slime. They run between $40 and $80 dollars depending on the features of your kit.

They work by injecting sealer and inflating the tire. Much easier then the kit shown above. Remember you may get a picture in foul weather or at night and will want something quick and easy.

Also, with your Benz you get 24x7 roadside assistance. Don't hesitate to use it.
Road noise is about as loud as my Lincoln LS was. It's not bad at all. I do think the style of the windows lets more sound in, but I think that's a fair trade.

The ride is what I would call not great at all on a rough/bad road. It's smooth, but you bounce all over. But on nice roads it's really nice, and it's got a great feel. If you're used to a softer ride you're probably going to hate the CLA.

Thanks for the feedback. I expected that with this small wheelbase, sport suspension and runflats, that the ride would be harder. And the bouncing over potholes was to be expected as well, but the real nub, is do you still feel connected with the pavement?
A sports car, even this lite version, is always going to be bouncy but should never feel out of control. If it does then this car really just looks great but is only average.

I realize that since you just got it, you are still "in love", but will you still be in two years?
CLA 45 comes with tire patch kit, sealant and pump. Not sure about other trims...

The car feels great on the road. I really enjoyed the feel of my Lincoln LS' a LOT, but this car feels better. I really like the feel on the highway.

I don't feel like it's losing connection on rough roads.

I think I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this car. I know what I love and what I can tolerate on a car. I can tolerate the crappy ride on rough roads. I can deal with a nice but harsher ride on normal roads. It's worth the tradeoff for everything else I love about the car. I could have afforded a car twice the cost, with a bigger engine and a nicer ride, but the CLA really just drew me in.
I tested a friend's 250 with run flat tires and it was way louder than mine with non run flat. You could hear the tires at all times, kind of the sound that you get when you drive a big truck with big tires. Pretty annoying! So I would blame the run flats... My 2 cents.
I have been driving one for about 3 months now while drive is hard I personally like it unlike my wife's Lexus. Somehow the harder ride gives me a better feel of the road.
I have the CLA 200, 2022 with the standard runflat tyres. I live in SE NSW Australia where the bitumen is of a very course nature. and I better state all CLA's in Australia are the AMG line. The car rides amazing on the standard 18inch AMG wheels, not harsh at all so no problem there. But and its a huge but, this car has so much road/ tyre noise that after only 600km I'm going to sell it. Honestly in my 63 years I have never had a car as noisy as this, it truly is unbearable to the point that having a conversation with your passenger is impossible. I test drove the car in Sydney on hot mix tar so there was no issue but as soon as I hit highway 31 the noise issue was more than apparent.
