The article is as follows: Internet, hands-off approach integral to car dealer's growth By Victor Godinez Staff Writer Peter Bulban discovered early on that he had a knack for selling sports cars. He borrowed $500 from his parents in 1977 while he was in high school to buy a Ford Mustang, on the condition that he repay them at the end of the summer. He got the car but never got around to paying back the loan, so his parents forced him to sell the car. "So I put it in The Dallas Morning News, and two people showed up at the same time and started arguing over the car," said Mr. Bulban, owner of Texas Mustang Sales in Dallas, a pre-owned car dealership that specializes in Jaguars, BMWs and Mercedes-Benz. "I put it in the paper for $500, and one guy said 'I'll give you $600,' the other guy said '$700,' and so forth and so on. Well, it wound up being $1,100." "I paid my parents back and started my business unknowingly," he said. "But I realized that I had an eye for special cars, and the business has grown from that point to where we are now the leading seller of pre-owned Jaguars in the United States. We sold 821 cars last year; 609 of those were Jaguars." Mr. Bulban said most people aren't confused that the name of the dealership contrasts with the make of the car he mostly sells, but the company will change its name to Texas Cars Direct this summer to match its Web Address. "With the Internet, our business is coast-to-coast," he said. "I would say that over 50 percent of our business is Dallas-Fort Worth, but we do a lot in the surrounding states. We've had a day where we sold a car to somebody in Miami and Seattle in the same day." That coast-to-coast customer base represents dramatic growth from when Mr. Bulban operated out of his house in the early 1980s. The company moved to its current Forest Lane location in 1989. "Since we've moved there, we've actually doubled our size," Mr. Bulban said. "We have a 22,000-square-foot indoor showroom now. That's where we keep up to 100 cars at a time." As the business has grown, so has the number of employees. "It started basically with just me, and was that way for some time," Mr. Bulban said. "I had friends who would sort of help me out, then I hired a customer, actually, who answered an ad for a car. He made a proposal that helped me expand the business, and we did." Texas Mustang Sales now employs seven people, and Mr. Bulban says he may add two more workers this summer. But he said he's deliberately stayed away from hiring traditional car dealership salespeople, preferring his employees to take a hands-off approach to sales. "I've seen a lot of tension on the part of our customers when those people start to slide into their normal way of doing business," he said. "My biggest successes have come from hiring people who are in the banking business." Until last week, the construction on LBJ Freeway meant you had to wind through a parking lot and the back side of a Home Depot to get to his showroom at Despite the navigation nightmare, Bulban sold a record $46 million in luxury pre-owned vehicles last year at his 31-year-old dealership. Eighty percent of the 1,675 cars were coming off leases and bought at auctions sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Financial Services USA. February, not usually a great month for car sales, is on track to be his best month ever, with an average of 10 Mercedes and Jaguars being sold each day this month. “We’ve been on fire since the beginning of the year,” Bulban says. “Prices are low. Selection is high. We can cherry-pick inventory.” On Friday, he had 180 cars on hand — 154 Mercedes, eight Jaguars and a small assortment of other models. The 52-year-old Bulban takes a bare-bones approach to high-end sales. There’s no receptionist to greet you, just a stack of booklets describing each vehicle and its price. He won’t dicker. Each car is sold for cost plus $1,000. He closes at 6 p.m. on weekdays and isn’t open on weekends or postal holidays. And forget the fancy coffee bar and complimentary doughnuts. If you want a soda or bottled water, you can buy one out of a machine for a dollar. The four-person sales staff gets paid a flat fee based on how many vehicles the dealership sells, not what they sell individually. One service Bulban does offer is a free ride from the airport. Every month, about a dozen customers fly in and drive a car home. Most come from other Texas cities and Oklahoma City. One customer flew all the way from Ghana to buy a*Mercedes S Class that he uses for a limousine. Albert Estrada, a senior vice president at PlainsCapital Bank in San Antonio, bought his first Jaguar from TexasCarsDirect .com in 2002 and is on his eighth Jag. He’s referred so many family members, friends and clients that he stopped counting at 20. “I could buy a brand-new Jaguar if I wanted to, and so could the majority of my clients,” Estrada says. “But we buy them from Pete because his cars are in such great condition, his prices are so good and his integrity is beyond reproach.” In 2009, Estrada’s 2001 Jaguar XKR convertible won the North American Jaguar Challenge Championship in San Antonio for its class. “I did not have to do anything special to get my car ready for this event other than washing and waxing it,” he says. “It was that clean when I purchased it from TexasCarsDirect in 2006.” Young entrepreneur Bulban, a Dallas native, started in the “car business” in elementary school, charging a quarter to put new license plates on cars in his Midway/Royal Lane neighborhood. In 1977, a 16-year-old Bulban borrowed $500 from his parents to buy a 1969 Mustang that was mostly green with a blue hood and primered fender. He was supposed to pay the money back by the end of the summer but goofed off and didn’t have it. So he ran an ad in*The Dallas Morning News. Two people showed up at the same time and started a bidding war. The winner paid $950. He paid his parents, bought another car and never looked back. As a teenager, he got up at 5 a.m. and scoured the newspaper for new ads. He called owners who had priced their cars too low and rushed to their homes with cash in hand. By 1981, he was calling on dealerships, looking for cars they wanted to unload in a hurry. The used-car manager at W.O. Bankston hated Saabs, so he’d hand out Bulban’s phone number to anyone who tried to trade one in. Bulban would buy a Saab for $5,000, drive it to Massachusetts or Maine, where he could sell it for $2,000 more, and fly home. He was netting $5,000 to $10,000 a month. In 1995, he went to an auction in St. Louis looking for deals on Mercedes. A guy from Jaguar Credit told Bulban that if he bought 11 Jags, he’d pay him $1,000 to cover his expenses. Bulban brought the cars to his showroom, sold out in three days and bought 18 more. “I didn’t realize the guy meant $1,000 per car,” he says. “I start getting these checks — the first for $11,000, then $18,000, and pretty soon I’m addicted. We sold several hundred Jaguars in a four-month period.” 2008 a bonanza His dealership, which changed its name from Texas Mustang Sales to in 2001, was the largest seller of used Jaguars in the United States until two years ago, he says. “We were pushing 100 a month by the time we really got into it.” But Jaguar sales have plummeted, so there aren’t many used Jags to buy. So far, the best month ever at was December 2008, when the bottom fell out of the economy and folks in California turned in leased Mercedes by the droves. “I went to California thinking I would buy 10 Mercedes, and I probably bought 60,” Bulban says. “A 2-year-old car that was originally $60,000 was selling at auction for about $20,000, or 30 percent below book value.” That translated to about $22,000 when they hit his sales floor after being reconditioned. He sold 2,305 Mercedes, Jaguars and Land Rovers in 2008 and 2009 for $84.3 million, the depths of the recession. Wife on the job Bulban’s wife of 17 years, Jenny, handles the operations — getting the vehicles from auctions to the sales floor. That usually means reconditioning them with new tires, brakes and service to the tune of $800 to $1,000. Some cars are still under factory warranty. Bulban sells extended warranties for those that aren’t. Jack Neshe, general manager of Adesa Auction in Boston, says he’s always happy to see Bulban at his Mercedes auctions. “By doing his homework, Pete knows what the number has to be to make it work for him,” says Neshe, who’s president-elect of the National Auto Auction Association. “He has a fantastic reputation for what he does.” As much as Bulban loves flipping cars, that’s not where he makes his real money. Last year, he brought in $2.3 million gross off financing and warranty contracts. “Just buying and selling cars wouldn’t cut it as a stand-alone business,” he says. “People call and say, ‘What’s your best deal if I write you a check?’ And I’m thinking, ‘I really rather that you don’t.’” * Terms & Conditions PAYMENT TYPES: Certified Funds and Institutional Financing FEES: Out of state buyers are not charged tax, title, or license.
