Mercedes-Benz and Nokia are partnering up to construct a self-driving car, after all that is the next big thing, right? Nokia will start with its cloud-based location service, HERE. Upgrades to the system will be no easy task as the system must learn the exact measurement of lane widths, and the exact location of road signage, along with other similar details.

Nokia is likely putting quite a bit of effort into the project, since it just sold its phone division to Microsoft last week, which leaves its maps division as one of just three divisions left in the company.

what a way for Nokia to finally get involved in something big, partnering up with Mercedes for a self-driving vehicle will do a lot for them.
pretty crazy how the GPS system they use to help guide the self-driving S-Class measures everything out on the road by the centimeter

Nokia...?

This is their last chance to make a come back. Well, if they can succeed with this project then they could just drop the business with the cell phones, they aren't doing so well with the mobile business anyways.

Yeah they clearly failed in the phone market, and that's not a good look for them especially when trying to do something with cars now.

and here I thought Nokia made phones.
They have lost the battle with mobiles ages ago since they have gotten rid of snakes on their phones. :D

Can't forget this game! It was pretty much the best game for phones at the time.

I was reading about what Google is doing with autonomous cars and it was talking about having autonomous taxis. You just call it up on your cell phone (which won't be built by Nokia) and the car comes to pick you up and drop you off. As usual, the thought is that this will revolutionize personal transportation.

It is going to be a race between all the different companies to make the first autonomous car and to figure out the best way to market it. Should it be a personal vehicle, or will the auto taxi make personal vehicles obsolete? I also wonder who is winning the race. Nissan says it will have an autonomous car by 2020, Benz is working with Nokia, and Google has been working at this for quite some time now.
