Official details of the Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG are out following earlier teaser images released back In November last year ahead of its official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG is representative of the “AMG Performance 50″ strategy for the future set to run up to the 50th birthday of Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017. It houses the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world with a maximum output of 360 hp and up to 450 Newton meters of torque.

Its power density of 181hp per litre outdoes even the most powerful super sports cars. At the same time, the engine also boasts supreme efficiency and complies with the EU6 emissions standard. The A 45 AMG also leads its segment in terms of fuel consumption, returning 40.9 mpg in NEDC combined mode meaning that the BlueDIRECT family is doing well. The A 45 AMG also features the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

The engine is a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0 liter codenamed M133 and based on the Daimler 2.0 liter turbocharged power plant developing a maximum output of 360 hp and up to 450 Newton metres of torque .The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed stands at 155 mph which is electronically limited. It features the AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a rear differential.

More details on the powerhouse indicate that the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers. The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel utilization and increases thermodynamic efficiency substantially, leading to lower exhaust emissions. Other highlights include the gravity-die sandcast all-aluminum crankcase, weight-optimized crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimized piston rings, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, air-water charge air cooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.

The twin-scroll technology provides for a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure, making effective use of exhaust gas back pressure, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas impulse. That is then made effective by the AMG sports exhaust system that features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap familiar from the SLK 55 AMG. The flap is continuously adjusted by map control according to the power called up by the driver, load status and engine speed. The result is a fascinating, full engine sound which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration.

The cooling system is based on components from the SLS AMG; this means a low-temperature circuit is deployed for air-water charge air cooling of the four-cylinder turbo engine. The large cooler section at the front level of the cooling module is supplemented by an additional cooler in the wheel arch. Together with the charge air cooler which is connected in series, a high-performance electric pump ensures the required flow through the water coolers located behind the large intake ports. Cooling of the transmission oil is integrated in the water cooling circuit for the engine.

The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG features a three-link front suspension provided with stiffer steering knuckles and totally new elastokinematics which has more rigid bearings are employed in the lower link plane. It comes as standard with twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, fitted with 235/40 R 18 tires.

The exterior is nothing short of AMG styling as its front view is characterized by the AMG twin blade radiator grille and the cross strut in the AMG front apron, both painted in matt titanium grey. Striking black flics surround the large cooling air intakes at the sides. Then there are the AMG light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design and the side sill panels with inserts in matt titanium grey. The AMG rear apron with its highlighted air outlet openings at the sides features a diffusor insert and trim in matt titanium grey not to mention the two square, chrome-plated tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap.

The A 45 AMG also comes with various AMG styling options among them being the AMG Aerodynamic Package that features AMG rear aerofoil, additional flics in front apron, larger front splitter and AMG carbon-fiber exterior mirror housing while the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fiber package features a front splitter, side sill panel inserts and trim on rear apron in genuine carbon fiber.

This is the new Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, the firm’s first hot hatch and, with 355bhp, the most powerful production hot hatch ever built. It will enable AMG and Mercedes to enter a new market as both firms attempt to attract younger buyers.

The A45 AMG will provide Mercedes with a rival for the likes of the BMW M135i and the next-gen Audi RS3, a sector in which the firm has never traditionally competed.

Based on the new A-class, the A45 marks the first time that AMG has produced anything smaller than the C-class, previously always its entry-level model and the vehicle that AMG boss Ola Kallenius describes as the firm’s “bread and butter car”.

The A45 will be significantly cheaper than the £58,000 C63. It will be priced at around £36,000, pitching it slightly above the M135i but below the next Audi RS3.

The A45 uses a four-cylinder engine, a first for an AMG-built car. It is a 1991cc turbocharged petrol with the highest specific output of any 2.0-litre engine yet fitted to a production car, developing 355bhp at 6000rpm and 332lb ft from 2750rpm to 5000rpm. Achieving the highest specific output was one of the goals of the A45 AMG project.

The A45 AMG is very much a bespoke car, unlike previous AMG-badged A-classes, which were essentially just trim and suspension upgrades. The all-aluminium engine, which uses a unique sand-cast block and a large twin-scroll turbo, is a new unit developed by AMG that will also be used in the forthcoming CLA 45. Each engine is handbuilt at AMG’s Affalterbach plant by a single technician, in keeping with AMG’s “one man, one engine” philosophy.

The high specific output is made possible by high cylinder pressures and advanced spray direct injection, which also helps to make the engine more efficient. Mercedes claims 34mpg and 161g/km of CO2, helped by the standard stop-start and alternator disconnect. It will reach 62mph in 4.6sec while top speed is limited to 155mph.

AMG decided early in the car’s development that the A45 had to be four-wheel drive. The car uses an AMG-tweaked 4Matic drivetrain, with Mercedes’ new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, reworked to handle the power and torque outputs and capable of splitting drive equally between the axles. This is the first time the gearbox has been combined with four-wheel drive.

The transmission has three modes — Controlled Efficiency, Sport and Manual — and the ESP stability system can be turned off altogether or switched to Sport.

A new braking system has been fitted, with drilled 350mm by 32mm discs at the front and 330mm by 22mm at the back. The steering has also been retuned, while the suspension components have been heavily upgraded with lower, tauter springs and dampers and firmer bushings. The engine’s cooling system uses technology developed for the SLS supercar.

The car’s exterior receives plenty of AMG upgrades. A deep front splitter and an AMG-specific radiator grille come finished in matt grey, while the air intakes and sill skirts are finished in gloss black, as are the door mirrors.

The A45 rides on grey 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with 235/40 tyres.

Inside, the standard Mercedes front seats have been replaced by a set of thin-shell AMG seats, which will be standard kit on UK cars, and the instrument cluster has been swapped for AMG’s own design. The A-class’s ‘eyeball’ air vents have red bezels and the seatbelts are also red.

Optional upgrades include a carbonfibre package, which replaces the front splitter, sill inserts and rear bumper trim with carbonfibre items. Red brake calipers and 19-inch wheels are also optional.

Performance upgrades include a new exhaust system, lower and stiffer springs and dampers, and various aerodynamic extras, including a rear wing and a larger front splitter that, the firm claims, improve downforce.

According to Kallenius, the A45 AMG is aimed at buyers in their 30s and 40s who are after a car that combines “performance and technology” and are “successful early in their careers”. He also said that it could appeal to AMG’s more traditional, older customers who were looking for a small, fun car. During its development the A45 was shown to S63 owners, at the opposite end of the AMG ownership scale to potential A45 buyers, to gauge their opinion. Their reaction, Kallenius said, was favourable.

The A45 AMG will get its first public outing at the Geneva motor show next month and it will go on sale in the UK in July.
